The Paper Based Diagnostics node will enable the production of low-cost diagnostics based on paper and other low-cost substrates. Given the simplicity of the techniques, the access to antibody production and the large market for, and impact of, such devices, the node offers research groups and entrepreneurs a great opportunity to develop prototypes towards commercialization. The development of low-cost diagnostics is seen as critical in the areas of environmental, human and animal health. Paper based diagnostics, in particular lateral flow tests (LFT) and paper-based microfluidic sensors, have been identified as sensor technologies which can have significant impact in South Africa, and the consolidation of manufacturing expertise within this hub will allow for further development of these devices.
